D-Day is the general military term for any day on which hostilities, an operation, or an exercise commences, or is planned to commence.  The most famous was 6th June 1944, the beginning of Operation Overlord (Allied landings in Normandy).  Along with the term H-Hour, D-Day originated in the First World War.  The term D-Day has also been used to denote debarkation day, 6th June 1944.
