St George's Memorial Church was built as a memorial to the thousands of men who died in the three battles of the Ypres Salient.  At the end of the Great War 500,000 men had died and 160 Commonwealth War Cemeteries around Ypres mark the areas where they fell.

Since the end of the Second World War, the Church has also been a memorial to the troops who passed through Ieper in the retreat to Dunkirk.

At the end of WW1, Field Marshall Lord French appealed for a church to be built as a memorial to the soldiers of Britain and the Commonwealth.  The foundation stone was laid on 27th July 1927 and the church was consecrated on 24th March 1929.
