Getting Published

Are you a budding author? Do you want to write a book?  Have you found a family member's war diary and think it would be great to get it published?

To research and develop a book one should go to public sources such as council records etc., use the website to get material a mass of material together and to develop a sense of what interests people. Then when you feel you have reached critical weight turn it into a couple of more-or-less finished chapters that you can show an agent or a potential publisher.  Up to that point, you have to just do everything in hope and on spec.

For general information on publishers go to www.publishers.org.uk and www.author.co.uk

If you are looking to publish a facsimile of for example, some original war diaries, you can miss out a lot of the groundwork mentioned above and simply contact the publisher or agent concerned.  You could also go the direct route and self publish to perhaps an already interested market.

You can get some finished copies made yourself using Print on Demand technology. Many publishers are already utilising 'POD' technology to keep books in print and produce small quantities of titles that are perhaps in specialist areas and do not require big print runs.

If you want to look into publishing yourself you can try the following companies who will produce the book for you.

For advice on publishing / self publishing try someone like writersworld, upso or upfront publishing

A large military publisher who uses the benefits of 'POD' technology is 'Naval & Military Press'.  You can find their website at www.naval-military-press.com.  They may be able to advise you or even be interested in your manuscript.

The following site may also be of some use as it contains excellent information on getting yourself in print - www.booktrust.org.uk/factsheets/getpub.htm
